Speed Runs

Speed running (trying to complete a videogame in the fastest time possible) is almost as old as gaming itself. At least, it's almost as old as games that have a definite end point or staging points, since speedrunning a game with infinitely repeating levels is Sisyphean.

Speed run of Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones in 25 segments completed on July 2 2005. Available in 3 versions: low quality, normal quality, and 60fps high quality. Author's comments: This game is shorter than Rekka no Ken (also known as Fire Emblem in U.S.), but a lot harder to speed through. For one, not all the enemies go down like flies, like most of the enemies in 7. Time for a chapter breakdown: Prologue: 45 seconds is only a few seconds from perfect if you ask me, so I think I did very...

Author's comments: I'm not good at making comments, I'm afraid. I do them after I do the run, so all I can see is the mistakes I made, or how horrible I was when I started the project, which results in a highly negative tone. Speed run of Quake 4 on private skill in 26 segments completed on December 29 2005. Available in 320x240 DivX and 640x480 h.264 versions. Author's comments: This game is extremely linear. Not only have they removed just about everything that can speed up your progress, like rocket jumping, they have also blocked like 99% of all possible shortcuts with invisible walls. Speed run of Body Harvest in 7 segments completed on July 30 2004. Author's comments: I just want to get this out of the way for the casual SDA viewer who may have stumbled onto this page - these videos probably won't be any good for anyone but a Body Harvest fan. The game never gained wide popularity but it did achieve quite a large underground following. The game itself, however, I find quite appealing, challenging, and fun, and it lends itself to a speed run. But a random viewing by someone...

Pure speed run of Metroid Fusion, completed on April 4 2004. Was the world record until June 26 2004. Author's comments: Immediately following my previous Any Percent run (I finished with 1:03), I decided to embark on a new run, this time collecting enough Missile Tanks to quickly take out Yakuza, Nettori, Nightmare and friends. The idea was that the time I spent collecting Missile Tanks would be negligible compared to the time I saved against the big bosses late in the game. I determined that...

Speed run of Star Ocean: Till the End of Time in 28 segments completed on June 7 2005. Available in three versions: low quality, normal quality, and 60fps high quality. Author's comments: I had originally thought that this run would be pushing the 7 hour mark VERY hard. I managed to pull it off quite a bit below that (thankfully) and wound up with a time of 4:11 when Luther drops. Skipping all the cutscenes makes all the difference. One of the main concerns I had with this run was money. Toward...

Available in original Visual Boy Advance .VBM emulator format as well as 2048 Kbps DivX and Quantizer 0 H.264 provided by Metroid 2002 . Speed run of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars done in 13 segments, completed on August 22 2004 Author's comments: RPG speedruns are fairly scarce for three reasons: 1) LOOOOOONG 2) Slow 3) Random! Comparatively, Legend of the Seven Stars is very fast paced and short when compared to classic Square and Enix RPGs. Another great thing about its gameplay is that enemies can be avoided with skill and practice and battles can be made all the easier by mastering the science (and, at times,...

Speed run of Tomb Raider 2 for PC in 19 segments completed on September 27 2005. Author's comments: Since I did Tomb Raider 3, I decided I may as well do Tomb Raider 2 as well. My main worry was actually the giant spider section in the Temple of Xian, but after some "training" I was able to do it without even skipping a beat, however I then found out I could completely bypass it anyway! I also thought it would be much harder because there are so many enemies, after a few levels though...
